arttutorialsSnowy Joe house

This tutorial is a simple step-by-step guide and describes the process used to create the house sprite seen below.

Step 1 : This sprite was created for a side scrolling game. However, instead of simply drawing the house side-on, a more interesting shape has been created by choosing to draw the house from a three-quarter view (between front and side view). Here is a basic house shape.

Step 2 : The house will be lit from the right (behind the house). Add some basic shadowing to the front face.

Step 3 : Next overlay a bold colour for the matching roof and door. Try to add details to create interest.

Step 4 : Add basic shadowing to the door and the front edge of the roof. Remember the light direction.

Step 5 : Add the chimney and doorstep. Remember that even objects like the doorstep also need to drawn in perspective, and hence the reason why it overhangs the door to the left.

Step 6 : Once again, add the shadowing; this time to the front faces of the chimney and doorstep.

Step 7 : Add a small porthole window. Remember to give the wall some depth on the inside edge of the window.

Step 8 : The sprite now needs some snow on the roof. Add the snow and remember to keep the snow very 'blobby' in appearance.

Step 9 : Adding the usual 'grey' shadows to the snow will be less effective. Try adding the classic 'blue' shadowing to the snow.

Step 10 : The basic block colours are now complete. It's time to add the detail to the flat surfaces. Create a new blend layer (at 20% Multiply), and paint the mortar areas between the bricks with black. This percentage opacity (currently at 20%) can be tweaked later if you are not happy with the intensity.

Step 11 : Create a new blend layer (at 20% Overlay), and paint the highlight areas of bricks in white. This quick and simple technique can be quite effective. Once again, this percentage can easily be tweaked later.

Final image

As the game had a winter theme, all my sprites had a white outline. Here is the final image with that white outline.

Snowy Joe house

I normally draw concept sketches, but as this sprite was intended to be small and I had a very clear idea on how I wanted it to look, I didn't need to sketch it first.
